We Won!

We’re very proud to let you all know that we entered Britain’s Best Loaf Competition, held recently at the Farm Shop and Deli show at the NEC, Birmingham, and organised by the British Baker magazine. We won the Innovation Award for our Easter Bread and came 2nd (highly commended) with our Wholemeal Loaf.

 

Gloucester Road Central Mayfest Saturday 5th May

Glos Rd Central Mayfest is less than a month away!
 
From 10am on Saturday 5th May we will have gingerbread and cup cake decorating for children outside the shop and fresh pizzas baking outside Joe’s Express.
 
We hope you will come and join us (and lots of other shops and businesses) at this annual free community event to celebrate the start of summer – remember to keep your eyes open for the Jack in the Green procession!
 

Arancini – Two New Fillings

Arancini are filled risotto rice balls, coated in breadcrumb and deep fried. At Joe’s Bakery they are freshly cooked each morning, and are popular in Sicily, and in Bristol!

Here are the 2 new fillings –

vegetarian Arancini with mozzarella, sun-dried tomato and Kalamon olives with fresh basil,

or Arancini filled with beef and savoury tomato sauce.

 

Tsoureki – a Greek Easter Sweet-Bread

Traditionally given as a gift to family and friends, Tsoureki is now eaten more regularly and is good as a coffee/teatime or breakfast bread. It is characterised by two particular ingredients –

Mahlab is a spice obtained from the stone of the St Lucie Cherry and is native to the eastern Mediterranean region

and Mastika comes only from the Greek Island of Chios.

 

Easter Bread

Our delicious Easter Bread is in the shop now – a wheat and rye bread containing raisins, cherries, mixed citrus peel, hazelnuts, walnuts and fresh lemon zest.

Easter News

This year we have 3 types of Hot Cross Buns – traditional, wholemeal, and chocolate.

 

Simnel Cake – a traditional lightly spiced English fruit cake made with fresh butter and containing cherries, citrus peel, currants, sultanas, fresh lemon zest and, of course, a layer of marzipan in the middle and on top. The eleven marzipan balls represent the twelve Apostles, minus Judas. Simnel Cake is traditionally associated with both Mothering Sunday and Easter.

 

We will be open on Good Friday from 7am – 5pm.

Open with our normal hours on Easter Saturday 7am – 5pm.

Closed Easter Monday.
